DAI is created through a decentralized protocol, originally MakerDAO and now Sky, rather than issued by one company. Like other dollar stablecoins, it's designed to stay at a value of one US dollar.
DAI. Sky introduced USDS as an upgraded version of the stablecoin, and DAI still circulates alongside it, convertible one to one through the Sky protocol. Keep in mind that some large exchanges stopped trading DAI in 2026 and converted their users' DAI balances to USDS. If you plan to move the DAI to an exchange later, check how it handles DAI first, or convert to USDS yourself.
No, you can receive DAI in an empty wallet. You'll need ETH to cover gas when you send, swap or use the DAI later, so it's worth adding a small amount before you plan to move it.
Some wallets only display tokens you've added to the list. Look for an option such as "Import tokens" and add DAI, and the balance will appear. You can also check the payout by searching your address in an Ethereum block explorer.
